How We Score Every Coffee Subscription

Your morning deserves better than a guess. Here's exactly how we evaluate every Canadian coffee subscription — from how fresh the beans actually are when they arrive, to whether the subscription will trap you or flex with your life.

We get asked this a lot: How do you decide which subscriptions are worth recommending?

Fair question. There's no shortage of Canadian roasters offering subscriptions these days, and most of them make the same promises—fresh beans, flexible delivery, great coffee. So how do you actually tell them apart?

We built a scorecard. Five categories, each scored out of 10, averaged into an overall rating. Here's exactly what we're looking at—and more importantly, why each category earned its place.

☀️ Freshness — The One That Matters Most

If we could only measure one thing, it would be this.

Coffee is a perishable food. Most people don't think of it that way, but it's true—once roasted, coffee starts a slow decline. The good news: there's a peak window, roughly 5–14 days after roasting, where everything is alive and vibrant. The bad news: a lot of subscription services ship beans that are well past that window before they even reach your door.

Our freshness score looks at four things:

Roast to Order (3 points) — Does this roaster actually roast your beans after you order, or are they pulling from warehouse inventory? Roast-to-order is the single biggest indicator that freshness is taken seriously. It's worth the most points because it shapes everything else.

Roast Date Printed on the Bag (2.5 points) — You can't evaluate freshness you can't see. Roasters who stamp a roast date are being transparent about what you're getting. Roasters who only show a "best by" date 18 months out? That's not a freshness commitment—that's shelf-life math.

Freshness Guarantee (2.5 points) — Does the roaster stand behind the freshness of what arrives at your door? A real guarantee means they've built their entire operation around getting you beans in that sweet spot.

Days Roast to Ship (2 points) — Even if a roaster claims "roasted to order," the gap between roasting and shipping tells you a lot. Beans roasted and shipped within 48 hours are in a very different place than beans that sit for a week before they're boxed up.

A perfect 10 here means you're getting beans roasted specifically for your order, clearly dated, and moving from roaster to your kitchen fast. Anything below a 6 should give you pause.

📦 Subscription Value — More Than Just the Price Per Bag

This category isn't about finding the cheapest coffee. It's about finding a subscription that actually works with your life—without trapping you.

Subscription Available (1 point) — Table stakes. If there's no subscription, there's nothing to score.

Free Shipping (2 points) — Shipping costs have a way of quietly eroding the value of an otherwise good deal. Subscriptions that offer free shipping—whether always or above a reasonable threshold—are being honest about the real cost of your coffee.

Cancel Anytime (1.5 points) — A subscription you can't easily leave isn't a subscription, it's a contract. We look for no-questions-asked cancellation. Life changes. Your coffee shouldn't hold you hostage.

Pause or Skip Deliveries (1.5 points) — Travel, a full pantry, a hectic month—there are plenty of reasons you might need to pause. Subscriptions that let you skip or delay a shipment show they're actually thinking about how real people use this.

Delivery Frequency Options (up to 1.5 points) — The more flexibility, the better. A weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly option scores full points here. One rigid schedule? One point. Lock-in delivery that doesn't flex at all? Zero.

Subscriber Discounts or Rewards (1.5 points) — Some roasters reward loyalty in a meaningful way—either through ongoing subscriber discounts or a rewards structure that gets better the longer you stick around. We give credit here for any genuine savings beyond the standard price.

Gift Subscriptions (1 point) — A good subscription makes a great gift. Whether it's for a remote-working friend or a parent who deserves better than grocery store beans, gift-friendly options matter to a real slice of people shopping here.

☕ Variety — Something for Every Morning Mood

Your morning isn't the same every day. Neither should your coffee be.

This category rewards roasters who give you options—not overwhelm, but genuine choice.

Roast Levels (up to 2.5 points) — Offering light, medium, dark, and espresso roasts earns full points. Two or more roast levels gets partial credit. A single roast? That's a specialty play, not a subscription service.

Single Origin (1.5 points) — Single origin coffees—beans from one specific farm, region, or country—are where coffee gets interesting. They're the difference between a generic "coffee flavour" and tasting what makes a Kenyan harvest different from a Colombian one. Roasters who offer single origins are taking quality seriously.

Blends (1 point) — A well-crafted blend is its own kind of art. Blends often produce the consistency that makes a great daily driver—the coffee you reach for without thinking because it never lets you down.

Decaf (1 point) — For afternoon cups, for the people you love who can't do caffeine, for the mornings where you want the ritual without the jolt. Decaf isn't an afterthought—it's an inclusion.

Rotating Origins (2 points) — Does the menu change? Subscriptions that cycle through different origins throughout the year keep coffee interesting and reflect what's actually in season. This is a strong signal of a roaster who's actively engaged with their sourcing.

Seasonal Offerings (2 points) — Similar idea, broader execution. Seasonal releases show a roaster who's paying attention to what's happening in coffee growing regions around the world—and sharing that with you.

🌍 Transparency — Knowing Where Your Coffee Comes From

This is where we separate roasters who talk about quality from roasters who can prove it.

Origin Transparency (3 points) — Can you actually see where your beans came from? Farm name, region, country of origin on the bag? This is the most important transparency signal. Vague "South American blend" labelling tells you nothing. "Huila, Colombia, 1,800m elevation, washed process" tells you everything.

Direct Trade (3 points) — Direct trade relationships mean the roaster has a real, ongoing connection with the farmers growing their coffee. It typically means better prices for farmers, better quality for you, and accountability that commodity sourcing simply doesn't have.

Fair Trade Certified (2 points) — Formal certification that sourcing meets ethical labour and pricing standards. Not every excellent roaster pursues certification (it's expensive and sometimes redundant with direct trade), but when it's present, it counts.

Organic Certified (2 points) — Certified organic means beans grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Again, some excellent farms aren't certified but use organic practices. Certification just means it's been verified.

A high transparency score means you're buying coffee with a story—one you can actually read on the bag.

♻️ Sustainability — Taking Care of More Than Just Your Cup

Coffee has a long supply chain. We believe the best roasters think about their footprint at every step of it.

Compostable Packaging (4 points) — Bags that can be composted at end of life are the gold standard here. It's also the hardest to do well—compostable bags that still protect freshness require real investment and commitment. We weight it the most because it represents an actual sacrifice of convenience and cost for environmental reasons.

Recyclable Packaging (3 points) — Not all packaging can be composted, but recyclable materials are still a meaningful step above standard landfill-bound bags.

Carbon Offset Shipping (3 points) — Getting coffee from a roaster in Vancouver to a customer in Halifax has a carbon cost. Roasters who offset that through verified programs are acknowledging the full picture of what it means to ship a product coast to coast.

How the Overall Score Works

Simple math: we average the five category scores. A perfect 10 overall would mean a roaster aced every single criterion—roast to order, radical transparency, total flexibility, maximum variety, and deep sustainability commitments. It's a high bar, because it should be.

In practice, most strong subscriptions land between 6 and 8. A score in that range means a roaster is doing the important things right, even if they haven't nailed every checkbox. A score below 5 usually signals meaningful gaps in freshness or flexibility—the things that affect your daily experience most directly.

We update these scores when roasters make changes to their offerings, pricing, or practices. Coffee subscriptions aren't static, and neither are we.
